Learning outside the classroom

At St Paul’s Primary School, we believe that all children have the right to experience the unique and special nature of being outdoors. Being outdoors offers both an opportunity to learn new things, as well as practice concepts they already understand with bigger and more active resources, ‘Learning in Context’.

The benefits of learning outdoors are many, and include:

  • The children working together
  • You can do things on a bigger scale
  • Learning can become really active and physical
  • You can use a wider range of natural found objects (especially in the Copse)
  • You have the space for large activities
  • Some children prefer being outdoors, and will access learning opportunities more freely than indoors
  • Being outdoors makes learning more memorable and appeals to children with all different learning styles

At St Paul’s we are so fortunate to have such beautiful school grounds, including our Copse and two amazing outdoor classrooms within the Copse so that learning outside can be accessible throughout the year.

We also have our own ‘Forest School’ lead Mrs Duke and all children in Years 1, 3 and 5 have ‘Forest School sessions during the school year.
