Summer Term 2023

Key Stage 2 Sports Day

On the 5th July 2023, Year 3,4,5 and 6 competed in the Key Stage 2 Sports Day. The event started with the GreenPower car leading the parade of children around the track in front of the crowds. After being welcomed by Mrs Alden, the first events started. First up was the long-distance events. 20 year 3 and 4 children ran a very competitive 500m race, gaining points for the teams they were running for followed by the Year 5 and 6 children running a 600m race. This too, was a very completive fast race with all children showing determination and grit.

After the long-distance events, all the children made their wa to their first zone. There were 7 events in total: bullseye, long jump, vertical jump, relay, sprints, hurdles and chest push. During the hour and a half of thrilling sport, each child competed in all the events to gain points for their teams.

With the events coming to a close, Miss George highlighted the successes from this year’s sport and awarded the end of ear sport cups.

Our first cup was a new cup awarded to a year 3 or 4 child who has shown commitment and determination throughout their summer swimming sessions. This cup was last presented in 1914 so we are very honoured to be able to reinstate this cup this year and in the future. The lucky recipient to this award was to Jupes in Year 4.

Our year 6 cups were presented to Shani, Molly, Emilija, Huxley, Ethan, Ted and Freddie. They have all shown commitment to sport throughout their years at St Paul’s and have continually progressed into great Sports people.

Key Stage 1 Sports Day

On the 4th July 2023, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 took part in their Key Stage 1 Sports Day. The excitement was building as they lined up on the Sports Zone, ready to parade around the field with parents watching. After Mrs Alden introduce the event to the crowd, each class marched their way to their first event. There were 6 events in total: bullseye, sprints, slalom dribble, pass along the line, long jump and ladders. Every child competed in all the events to gain points for their team. There was so much fun being had by the competitors and lots of positive praise from our Year 5 scorers and parents. It was an amazing event with all the children show casing their sporting abilities. The scores were in…… drum roll please…… 2023 KS1 Sports Day winners are………Citrines!!!!

Pixham—10th July 2023—reported by George A (Elm)

When we arrived, us (year 6s), year 5s and one year four girl (Elizabeth) had high hopes of doing well in the Athletics Meet at Pixham. We were greeted after school at Pixham lane by Miss George with the information on who was running and fielding at what times. The first runners were the year 5 s who prepared for their first race of the afternoon, and on the other side of the field was the year 6s doing their field events (vertical jump, long jump and howler throw). After the Year 6 fielding and  Year 5 track event, the year groups swapped, with the year 6 children competing in the track events and the year 5 children competing in the field events. The track events included 150m, 75m and 600m races.

Next up were the relays. When it was the girl’s relay Elizabeth accidentally got them off to a speedy start and this continued with some amazing runs from all 4 girls, gaining 1st place.  The boys followed with an equally competitive race coming in 3rd. It was now year 6s turn where they were running the full track as a relay (4x100m) Both teams did so well and we can 1st and 3rd again.

There where 6 trophies that could be won and surprisingly we won 5 out of 6!  The trophies we won where jumping, girl’s track, boy’s track, relays meaning we also won the OVERALL trophy too!

We had such a fun time doing all of the events and cheering on our teammates.

GreenPower—Goodwood 9th July 2023

Today was the day we went all the way to Goodwood and competed against 71 other cars! There was even a team who came from Spain especially for this event. When we first arrived, we checked if our car was looking good and ready and then we handed in our portfolio and also got our new car number. Later, we all got called for a safety briefing and we got told which cars were doing which event first. We were told to do the drag racing first and luckily, we beat many faster cars, coming 40/71 After that, we went to do the slalom racing and whilst that was happening, the rest of us did some litter picking. We did amazingly at this event and came is a respectable 30/71. Then, we got to go for a break and eat lunch whilst watching Spitfires flying overhead!. Later on, we went to the pitstop station and we completed it in 30 seconds for changing all 4 wheel s. For this event, we came 6/71. Next, was sprints where we went really fast, coming in 38/71. We had another race which we did amazing in which was against all 71 cars on the Goodwood race track which was 2.3 miles! We over took many cars and some cars crashed or broke down. We came 18/71 for this race  Finally, was the 12+ race and we came 8th place which was completely unexpected but was really cool. After was awards but sadly we didn’t win anything but we had an amazing time and would love to go again and we came 22nd overall which was a fantastic achievement.

GreenPower 17th June 2023—St Paul’s School London

This week, we went to our first race event!!!!!

We arrived at a St Paul's school in London and got our car number (number 11). We handed in our portfolio, which we have been working on all year, and we did some litter picking whilst we waited for the racing to start. First, we did a safety briefing. This is when a scrutineer come around to check that we have built our car correctly and that the driver is safe with the helmet, gloves and correctly positioned seat belt.

Our first race was the drag race. This event involves cars going at top speed on a straight course and stopping within a certain zone. Next up was the slalom, which is pretty trick as we have to navigate through gates at top speed and stop within a parking area without hitting a any cones otherwise we would get time penalties. We did pretty well at this event and hopes were high for our next event after lunch. Next, we had another race which was the sprint, where we race against other cars around a lapped track, and we got into the semi-finals! Sadly, we got beaten but we still had a lot of fun.

Overall, we had a great time in London and we came away with THE BEST BOPDYWORK TROPHY!!!

Football inspiration

On the 30th June we were lucky enough to have an ex England capped football player (Pauline May) and Mole Valley Girl’s Football team come in to talk to Year 5 and 6 and give them time to learn more football skills. To start the morning, Pauline spoke about her journey through sport and talked about how she had to persevere and show determination and have hope in order to succeed as there were many barriers that she crossed along the way. It was really inspiring to her story and to be able to see her England cap. After, the year groups had time with the Mole Valley Girl’s and their coach to learn further skills. It was an amazing morning. Thank you.

Year 3 and 4 Rounders

St Paul’s were very enthusiastic and worked really well together as a team. We came joint first in our group with Powell – we went to play off for 3rd/4th place as Powell had won against us in the first round. We came 3rd overall. Super team spirit, enthusiasm and sportsmanship! I was very proud of you all.

Year 3 and 4 PhysiFUN County Finals

On Friday 23rd June a group of 8 year 3 and 4 children went to compete in the PhysiFUN County Finals in Cobham. The children were amazing and showed great game play during there 9 different games.

During the afternoon, the children were scored for the values they were showing, including determination, honesty, self-belief, respect and passion.

At the end of the afternoon, we found out how each team did and, amazingly, we came FIRST!!!

We were all so happy and couldn't believe we had managed to win!!

Year 5/6 Rounders

The year 5 and 6 boys and girls had a tough afternoon of rounders matches, against the other schools in Dorking. They did really well and showed good perseverance and determination. Well done team!!!

Girls Year 5 and 6 Cricket

What an amazing day!!

Our Girl's Cricket team went to Sunbury Cricket Ground to play against all the other finalists in Surrey.

We had a tough pool, against Lovelace and The Raleigh. We away from the pool with a loss and a draw.

After lunch, we played for the PLATE TROPHY against 8 other schools.

First, we won our first too games, but narrowly lost against Park Hill.

It was nailbiting as Park Hill had also won 2 matches so it was all on how many runs we had got. We had got through to the final!!!

In the final, we were against The Raleigh School again and it was such a close match. Neither school knew who had won until it was time for the presentation.

We were shocked to hear that we had won by only 4 runs!!! Wow - we came away with the Plate trophy and also a Spirit of Cricket Award!!!

Girls Year 5 and 6 Cricket

On Thursday 8th June, 10 Year 6 children went to Newdigate Cricket Club to compete against 6 other schools from Dorking. We had some tough matches against North Downs and St Matrin's to start our day but the girl's did amazingly and won both matches. Their batting was strong and their fielding even better, showing amazing team work, with backing each other up.

Our next match was against St Joseph's. In fact, they were our hardest competitors as their bowling was strong and they hit some long balls but we won with a good margin.

Our moral was high going into lunch but we had to keep focused. 2 more games and we had our sights on the win.

Surrey Hills we again strong but we came out with a win and our last game was against St John's where we managed to get a massive 9 wickets!

It was an amazing day and to win all our matches was a dream come true. The best thing is that we get to compete again at the county finals in Sunbury on the 21st June!

WE can't wait!!!

Boys Year 5 and 6 Cricket

On Tuesday 6th June, the Year 5 and Year 6 boys spent the day at Newdigate Cricket Club last week. They had to play against 4 other local schools.

They had a strong start on their 1st match and they drew on the game after.

They had a close game against Surrey Hills and they managed to win by only a few runs ahead by some strong fielding and some unbelievable outs.

Their last game was tough with some strong bowling from North Downs.

Throughout the long day both year groups showed excellent sportsmanship and worked incredibly well as a team.

PhysiFUN Festival

On Tuesday 25th a small group of KS2 children took part in a multi skills festival at St John's school. The group had an amazing afternoon filled with fun games and lots of activity.

Spectacular Swimming Gala

During the sunny Thursday of 20th April, a group of pupils were given the chance to race other Dorking schools in a swimming gala. The students were: Hannah W; Maisie G; Indie M; Oscar R; William S; Shani S; Isis C; Huxley; Chloe H; Anya W; Ellie A; Miriam T; Zadie K; and Hudson K.  This event took place in the lovely Priory School pool.

Ready to race, the students took their places either on the blocks or in the swimming pool. Take your marks, Beep! The competition had begun!

The encouraging cheering was so loud it bounced off the walls, and St. Pauls had some particularly strong swimmers.  However, much of the racing was very competitive, until we saw Maisie G in the 25m Butterfly race.  She was a rocket!  Although the butterfly was exciting, the relays were also great.  Cheering increased, swimming got splashier and best of all, we were faster!  When the time came to hear the results, the atmosphere turned tense.  In 6th place, St Joseph’s, 5th place Powel Corderoy, 4th place St Martins, 3rd place North Downs, 2nd place Surrey Hills and …  1st place, St Pauls!  This was the fifth year that St Paul’s have won the competition.

Well done to all competitors, there was some thrilling racing!  See you next year!

Spring Term 2023

Rushing rugby

On the 20th of March after a long, bumpy journey to Dorking Rugby Club in Brockham there was a long holdup from the un-expected arrival of another school, Surrey Hills. There were 5 schools there including us (St Paul's). In our first match we played St Joseph's which resulted in us coming together as a team and beating them 3-1. Our team work continued in the other matches but unfortunately we had some loses, draws but also some more wins!

It was a fantastic afternoon and we really enjoyed ourselves, eventually coming 4th overall.

Netball Year  5 and Year 6

The netball tournaments took place on the 13th and 14th March 2023.

Every single girl there conducted themselves in an exemplary way and St Paul’s should be very proud of them.

It was a tough for the Yr6’s but they played SO well, smiles on faces & supported each other every step of the way. Seeing the progress they have made since they started the netball club was amazing.

The Yr5’s only lost their first game (by 1!) and coming second - by only 3 points!

Yet again - each and everyone one them were a delight and represented St Paul’s in the best possible way. The level of team work and support they showed each other was simply amazing - there were some nerves initially but together they got through it all and dominated on court.

We could not be prouder of all the girls both on and off the court.

Fish out of Lifesaving

On Saturday 11th March, 8 year 5 and 6 children took part in a Lifesaving competition at Dorking leisure Centre. The competition consisted of 9 different activities, all showing different aspects of lifesaving, including straddle jumps, rope throwing, treading water and a knowledge quiz. The 2 teams did amazingly well and came 11th and 14th out of 24 teams taking part. An amazing achievement. Well done!

Surrey Schools Cross Country

On Saturday the 11th of March 2023, St. Pauls were competing at Priory Park in a 2.4km (1.5 miles) cross country race - for some it was their last chance to represent the School in an official cross-country race.  In the Year 5 race, Isla came in a very incredible 2nd place. In the Year 6 race, St. Paul’s had 3 participants Huxley, who came 7th, Ethan, who came 10th and Ted, who came in 37th out of 42 total participants.

They all ran amazingly well, were great representatives of their Schools and were incredibly proud of their achievements. It was a beautiful day and sun shone down on the competition which made it even more enjoyable.

In the Year 5 race, Isla came 2nd place.

In the Year 6 race, St. Paul’s had 3 participants Huxley – 7th , Ethan - 10th and Ted 37th.

Cross Country 3rd Round

It was a fantastic meet, with lots of enthusiasm and energy. St Paul's dud really well and it was great to see so many children cheering each other on. There is only one more meet before the final results so fingers crossed!!!

Quicksticks Hockey

The Quicksticks Hockey tournament took place at  St. Johns on the 23th February 2023. St. Paul's were competing in a tournament against 7 other teams. St. Pauls had been spending 5 whole weeks preparing their perfect team.

At St. John’s the team prepared for the first game, which they won 3-1. In the end, St. Pauls came 2nd to North Downs their friendly rival in most sports. Coming home, the whole team felt happy with their wonderful place.

Sports Hall Athletics

Last Friday (3.2.2023), a team of 24, year 6 and year 5 students made they way to the Ashcombe to take part in a Surrey athletics competition, against 7 other local schools in order to reach the county finals.

The competition was a fantastic experience including challenging running events, fun obstacle relays and exiting fielding activities. “Let’s get racing.” enthused Zoe whilst preparing for her race.

As everyone anticipated to hear the final results, slowly they revealed the winners and amazingly St. Paul's came 3rd but unfortunately, we won’t make it to the next round.

What a wonderful day and incredible experience. Students can’t wait to take part in next year's event.

Football County Finals

On the 20th of January the year 6 football team participated in the Meadowbank Football Tournament finals. They played against Guildford with a hope of winning. Ted in goal, George on the right, Zac on left, Leonardo in defence with Huxley by his side, Aidan and Freddie together up front with Harvey and Ethan.

First Match/St. Pauls vs Ashley

We started off with hope in our hearts. Not playing attackingly, we kept on losing the ball because the other team was very strong and powerful. In the end, St. Paul's sadly lost by a score difference of 5 points-we didn’t score because of the amazing goalie on the other side.

In the next match, the lads were a bit hung down about not winning the match before and we had to win two of our three matches to get to the semi-finals but we lost this match. We had a positive attitude going not the last match and it went as well as possible as, at the last half of the last match, we finally scored two amazing goals.

At the end everyone had had fun.

Panathlon

The children were very excited on the way down to the Priory School for the Panthalon Activities! As they were walking down, they had lots of discussions and ideas on what they’re day would be like.

We arrived early and waited for other schools to join us sitting on a long bench looking and discussing at what activities they could see.

Once all the schools arrived, we were introduced to the lovely Priory Students who were going to be helping us throughout the morning, along with the very fun organisers who explained how the mornings activities would work. It really was all about having lots of fun!

Some of the activities included:

Table tennis

Bowling

Basketball practice

Velcro ball throwing an inflatable dart practice. (These were all very large versions of the games)

All the children worked together as a team and could earn points throughout the games. They showed each other incredible encouragement, support, and positivity. Us teaching staff were so very proud of how much they pushed themselves out of their normal comfort zones!

At the end of the morning, each school was given some wonderful medals for taking part, which the children absolutely loved! We cannot wait to take part again next year!

It was a super day, packed with encouragement and positivity. The children represented St Paul's brilliantly and worked well as a team, supporting each other on every activity and modelling our school value of perseverance superbly.

Year 5/6 Girl’s Football

On Friday 25th November, a team of year 5 and 6 girls competed in the Dorking School’s football tournament at The  Meadowbank stadium. It was amazing to experience playing on a professional pitch. It was a cold afternoon, but we soon warmed up and were ready to start our first game. It was a narrow loss but this did not worry us and we soon came back to win a few games. The opponents were tough but we raised our game and eventually came 4th overall. We were so proud of our achievements.

Ballet Day

Cross Country Craziness

Energy was at its highest when Key Stage 2 stepped up for a Cross Country run, with Year 4 under taking on one and a half kilometres and Year 5/6 doing two kilometres.

The event took place at the Weald School which is just outside Dorking where there were two fields which we would be using to run the race.

Schools all over Dorking took place in this speedy event, St. Pauls being one of them. There was a nervous but very much exciting atmosphere as the first race kicked of with the Year threes. After this, Year 4 managed to scrape a victory which we took with confidence, Isla in Year 4 taking the crown by miles.

For Year Five and Year Six, it was tense and exciting as they started there two kilometres.

With delight, Ethan.H crossed the finish line first sending ST. Pauls into a delightful cheer.

Well done St. Pauls and let’s win more races next year!

Historic Win for St Paul’s Yr6 Football Team

Year 6 Inter-Schools Football Tournament - Thursday 3rd November

The Year 6 Football Team had a wonderful afternoon competing in the local inter-school football tournament.  The pressure was really on for the team as the last time that St Paul’s had won this tournament was 14 years ago, before any of the team were born!

The squad was made up of 9 players from Juniper and Elm classes.  After two training sessions they went into the competition confident of doing well.  It was a talented team and in defence were Freddie H, Huxley CB and Ethan H, in midfield we had Leonardo BH, George A and Zac E and at the front there was Aidan O and Harvey P.  In goal Ted S was the team anchor.

The team started strongly with a 3-1 win against Surrey Hills, followed by another 3-1 win against St. Joseph’s which really lifted our morale.  Next was Powell Corderoy, who had fielded a very strong team.  However, we managed to beat Powell 1-0 with Huxley scoring the winning goal and an incredible save from Ted in goal that kept us happily in the title race.

Our stamina was still high and we went on to win against St John’s 1-0 and then it was the match we had been most nervous about – St Martin’s, last year’s champions.  It was a hard-fought match with some super defending from Ethan and Freddie and then, just before the end of the first half, Huxley lobbed a ball to Aidan who volleyed in a staggering goal that won us the game, and the tournament, with us only conceding two goals.

An historic win!  Well done St Pauls!

Sports crew 2022 - September 2022

On 7th October 2002, 10 children from Year 6 went to The Ashcombe school to learn to become sports leaders. As a team, they learnt lots of different team building active games and started to understand the importance of preparation. They thought about the equipment they needed, how to demonstrate the games and how to explain the games to different age-groups.

It was a really enjoyable morning and, already, the team have been working hard each play time to make everyone enjoy more active playtimes.
