St. Paul’s C of E Primary School

Reception classes

In Reception we have two classes - Oak Class and Ash Class.

In Oak Class, Mrs Edwards and Mrs Suggitt are the class teachers and Mrs Wan is the teaching assistant. Miss Stanley-Ward is the class teacher in Ash Class with teaching assistants Mrs. Holloway and Mrs. Shilson.

In Reception we continue the Early Years Foundation Stage which the children began in Nursery. The Foundation Stage Curriculum is divided into seven areas of learning. The prime areas are Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development ,Communication and Language. The four specific areas are Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding of the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

In Reception, we learn through play, child-initiated and adult-led activities. Our ongoing provision enables children to use the knowledge and practise the skills that they learn in our adult-led inputs.

We teach early reading and phonics using mainly a mixture of the Jollyphonics scheme (try their excellent free app for phones to find out more and learn the songs) as well as the 'Letters and Sounds' Scheme.

When it comes to reading books, we use a variety of schemes, including the Oxford Reading Tree, Story World, Phonics Bugs and Rigby Rocket.
